Eat the Seasons

Wednesday, May 09th, 2007

There are several good reasons why we should eat food that’s grown locally and is in season:

  1. it tastes nicer
  2. it’s often cheaper
  3. it’s a way of supporting your local economy
  4. it goes some way to reduce the amount of energy needed to grow and transport your food (and help reduce your carbon footprint)

However, whilst it might be obvious to even the towniest of muddy people when some things, like strawberries, are in season, you may like us find yourself a little confused as to when’s the best time to eat, say, aubergines or Jerusalem artichokes.  If that’s the case, you may find the Eat the Seasons website quite handy.

Updated weekly, Eat the Seasons lets you know what’s in season right now and provides articles, recipe ideas and great tips for would-be seasonal cooks.  “Seasonal Food of the Week” is currently asparagus, which is only really in season in May and June, so get in quick!  You can also sign up to their weekly newsletter so you’ll never miss out.
