On Your Marks, Get Set…Message!

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

As promised, we have just given out two days’ free subscription to anyone with a visible profile.  That means that thousands of you will be able to send and receive messages and hopefully find love, or at least strike up a good conversation, this Valentine’s Day.

To help you on your way, here are a few tips about sending messages:

• Be proactive.  Don’t sit and wait for people to contact you; if you like the look of someone, send them a message.

• Refer to the person’s profile.  Show that you have read it by talking about things they have mentioned in it.

• Think about the length.  A short “Hello, I liked your profile – if you like mine, then send me a message” is no good; it’s actually pretty lazy, as all you are doing is asking them to write you a message.  However, a 500 word essay listing every one of your interests and all the reasons why you think you and the recipient are well-suited isn’t really the ticket either.  Aim for a happy medium and show genuine interest in their profile.

• Don’t write the same email to every man/woman on the site.  Men are the worst culprits: you may think you’re hedging your bets and will get more of a response but, believe us, it’s all about quality here, not quantity.  The very fact that you won’t have picked up on anything specific about the person’s profile will be a bit of a give-away and will lessen your chances of a response.

• Respond to people, even if you are not interested.  If someone has obviously read your profile and taken the time to write you a message but you are not interested, the kindest thing to do is send a message back saying thank you but you don’t feel you are very well suited.

Have fun and let us know how you get on!
