10 Things Not to Wear on a First Date
Thursday, April 09th, 2015
For a first date, your outfit should be matched to the activity that you are taking part in, it should also be clean, comfortable and presentable.
Here are 10 things that you should not wear on a first date, although there are always exceptions to a rule:
- Too much fragrance – Most people put emphasis on their date being clean and fresh, however very few people enjoy a strong fragrance. No more than two spritzes of perfume or aftershave just in case
- Turtlenecks – If First Dates has taught us anything, it’s that the general public do not like a man or a woman to wear a turtleneck on a first date. We haven’t heard anything about knitted tank tops or flares, but we’re assuming that all 70s comeback fashion is off the cards.
- Incredibly tight clothing – It’s a good idea to be able to move and to sit down when you’re on your date, so avoid anything that’s probably a size too small. There are also issues with revealing too much, but we will leave that to your imagination.
- Clothes that swamp you – On the other hand, you don’t want to look like you’ve borrowed your clothes from someone who is twice your size.
- Muddy clothes – We love mud; it’s what binds country-minded people together, but mud on your clothes and footwear is too casual for a first date. Even if you are wearing wellies to meet up at a country show, make sure they are clean at the start of the date, as it shows that you have made an effort.
- Unsuitable footwear – If you’re meeting for a coffee, go for something smart, but not formal, like leather boots. If you’re a lady who likes high heels, by all means wear them if you’re going for a non-active date. Sports trainers should only be worn if you are taking part in an activity date that requires you to wear them.
- Rude T-shirts – T-shirts that say things like ‘babe hunter’ look adolescent and really suitable for a first date.
- Underwear on show – If you can see your underpants above your trousers, use a belt to hitch them up. Bras should also be covered up.
- Toes on show – Unless you’re at the beach, keep your toes covered up. However, that does not mean embracing the socks and sandals look.
- Heavy makeup – How much makeup you wear is a very personal thing, but try to go for a natural look.
