Your dating profile gives other people an insight into who you are, so it’s important to make sure that it represents you in the best light. Here are so dos and don’ts for creating the perfect profile.

Dos

Tell the truth – You may think that people will be more impressed if you tell a few white lies, but it will prevent them from getting to know the real you.

Tell people about your hobbies – If you’re looking to meet people who share the same interests as you do, it’s a good idea to let people know what you like to do. It also helps to go into detail, for example, instead of saying ‘I like to run’, say ‘I’m training for my first marathon at the moment’. The extra detail will enable people to share their own experiences with you when they choose to get in touch with you.

Keep your profile up-to-date – Every now and again, take a look at your profile and see if everything is still relevant. For example, if you have written your age in your profile and have since had a birthday, it’s time to take it out. Also, remove any references to events like New Year or Christmas that will quickly age your profile.

Write enough – Writing one line looks lazy and makes it seem like you aren’t keen to meet someone. Try to write at least one short paragraph that expresses your personality.

Don’ts

Write an essay – Writing too much is as bad as writing too little. The ideal amount is approximately 300 words. If you write a draft of your profile in a word processing package like Word, you can use a word count to check the length.

Mention your ex – Talking about your ex shows that you are not over them, regardless of whether it is positive or negative.

Share personal details – Adding your phone number, email address or social media details in your profile might seem like a smart way to avoid paying for membership, but it means that anyone can get in contact with you, whether you like it or not. Using the messaging service on the website is a good way to protect your details and if you notice any strange behaviour you will be able to report the person to the website administrator.
