Be Yourself

One of the most common pieces of dating advice is ‘just be yourself’, but what exactly does that mean?
Don’t lie
The most important aspect of being yourself is telling the truth – don’t pretend to be someone who you are not in the hope of impressing them. Even a little lie will be found out eventually.
Your profile
Being yourself means not copying anyone else’s profile, not copy-pasting advice from dating advice blogs (even our blog) and avoiding clichés like ‘I like going out or staying in’.
Think about what makes you stand out from the crowd. For example, what do your friends know you for – are you the group’s practical joker, or the group’s agony aunt? Do you have a penchant for Sherlock Holmes, or a collection of war memorabilia? Your quirks are what will make you stand out and adding a few interesting stories will give an insight into your character.
What you might think of as ‘weird’ is what might just draw someone to you.
Your photos
If you like to dress up in funny costumes, or to pull silly faces, don’t feel that all of your photos should be sensible and ordinary. We ask that your Main Photo shows your face clearly, but you have free reign over your additional photos (except for nudity).
Your messages
Use your messages to get to know someone and don’t worry about saying exactly the right thing. Keep your messages personal.
First date
Although we advice against being crude, or too controversial on your first date, it is important to let your personality shine through. You may think that agreeing with your date all the time is a good way to show that you have a lot in common, but it can look like you don’t have the confidence to say what you really think.
Remember that there is someone for everyone – so if you pretend to be someone who you are not you are missing out on meeting someone who loves your quirks.
