Your first date is the most important date that you will go on as it will decide whether you see that person again or not.

Here are some simple, yet common mistakes that can stop you from getting a second date…

Turning up late

Even if you don’t mean to be late, it can can come across as rude. Make sure that you plan your route well and that you leave plenty of time to get there. Your sat nav may seen infallible, but as someone who has found myself in a signal free area with no map, I can assure you that it is a good idea to familiarise yourself with a route first and to write down a list of instructions.

Dressing inappropriately

Your first date outfit should be appropriate for the activity that you are taking part in. For example, if you are going for a walk around a country garden, you should avoid wearing formal footwear and if you are meeting in a cafe, Wellington boots would be inappropriate.

It’s also very important to make sure that your outfit is clean and well turned out – grab a lint roller or a brush to make sure that you aren’t coated in pet hair and make sure to iron anything that shows creases.

Leaving a bad smell

How you smell can make or break a date, as body odour and strong fragrances can be a huge turn-off. If you are worried about getting sweaty, try to wear breathable fabrics that are loose around your armpits and take a freshening wipe and a mini deodorant with you to freshen up before your date.

Fresh breath is also essential, so avoid strongly smelling food and smoking before you meet with your date.

Not listening

The goal of your date is to find out how well you get along with one another, so it’s essential to talk and to listen. Aim for a balanced conversation where you both get an equal chance to speak.

Also, it should go without saying, but you should ignore your phone during the date as it’s rude to be reading your messages, or taking a call.
